Breakout rooms allow hosts to divide a meeting into smaller, separate sessions. For example, the FBCW often uses breakout rooms during monthly Socials to give participants the opportunity to discuss different topics in small groups.

Hosts can choose how participants are assigned to breakout rooms:

  • Automatically – Zoom assigns participants evenly across rooms
  • Manually – Hosts assign participants to specific rooms
  • Self-select – Participants choose which breakout room to join

Hosts and co-hosts can move freely between breakout rooms at any time to monitor activity or provide assistance.

Breakout rooms function in the same way as the main session. Participants can use features such as screen sharing and apps as they usually would, depending on the meeting’s settings.
